Conference Program Manager

Resource Recycling, the Portland, Ore.-based publisher and conference company, seeks a full-time, Portland-based professional to assist in producing three national, recycling-related conferences, as well as other events.  This position will assist in the planning of conferences relating to three different aspects of the recycling industry – plastics recycling, scrap electronics recycling and general municipal recycling.  The Program Manager works with both our editorial and conference teams and reports to the company's Editorial Director.


The ideal candidate will excel in the following areas:

  • Project management
    • At least two years experience managing projects and/or programs and teams, specifically managing peers in a collaborative environment
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to keep others on track and ideas organized
  • Recycling landscape
    • Knowledge of recycling industry and interest in learning more about the business
    • Capacity to research topical issues and effectively synthesize gathered information
  • Work style
    • Ability to work collaboratively while maintaining ownership and accountability for own project tasks and deadlines
    • Proactive approach to making contacts, developing sources and maintaining relationships
    • Sense of humor
  • Ability to travel to conferences and events 3-4 weeks per year (non-consecutive). This year travel is required for the following dates:
    • Aug. 29 - Sept. 4, 2015
    • Sept. 26 - Oct. 1, 2015
    • Jan. 30 - Feb. 4, 2016

Job Responsibilities

At any given time the Conference Program Manager might be engaged in any of the following activities:

  • Creating and managing a project management system to ensure that tasks are being completed on time
  • Monitoring the recycling landscape (state, national and international) to stay abreast of current industry trends and issues
  • Working collaboratively with editorial and conference team to identify relevant topics, speakers and complementary ancillary events for each conference/event
  • Overseeing communications with speakers and moderators, including tracking extensive details of their participation and managing on-site issues during the conference
  • Writing promotional copy and finding new ways to increase attendance through creative promotions
